Under the guidance of the National Science and Technology Council, the Taiwan Eastbound Alliance - Landing America (TeaLa) has partnered with the National Cheng Kung University's (NCKU) Innovation Headquarters for a seminar on advancing startups to the United States. The seminar was held consecutively in Taipei and Tainan on the 25th and 27th, featuring Dr. Edison Chen, CEO of the New Eastbound Alliance, Dr. Min-Yi Shih, Head of the New Eastbound Alliance Los Angeles Office, and relevant startup lawyers, who shared opportunities for startups heading to the United States, with a particular focus on analyzing the current state of startup investment in Los Angeles. The events were well-attended and full of enthusiastic exchange, with many startup teams eager to explore the US market.
The seminars were conducted at two different venues: the Taipei NCKU Alumni Association and the NCKU Innovation Headquarters. In addition to the primary speakers, there were informative presentations by prominent legal experts such as Dr. Bryan Huang, Managing Partner at TaipeiLaw Attorneys-at-Law and Dr. Chiang Yi-Wei, Biomedical Consultant for Giant Group. These presentations dissected the current situation and opportunities related to entering the US market, accompanied by practical case examples regarding patents and business applications.
Dr. Min-Yi Shih, the Head of the New Eastbound Alliance Los Angeles Office, has long been deeply involved in the Los Angeles, California market, having extensive experience investing in startups and serving as an advisor to several angel investment networks and accelerators. He reviews over 150 fundraising pitches each month. He emphasized that for startups to succeed, "products must be customized, and businesses must localize." Startup themes, talent, investment sources, resource connections, and risk management must all be localized. Entering the US market is not just about "landing," but it's also about "launching." It requires a commitment to deepening one's presence in the local market.
This is the first time the New Eastbound Alliance has partnered with a domestic university to organize seminars focused on expanding into the United States. The choice of NCKU as a partner is attributed to its significant technological capabilities and its leadership in developing a research and industry platform in southern Taiwan. Both seminar events were well-attended. In addition to the founders of new startup companies like Taiwan Biochiplet Medical, Digispace, and Unicorn Life Tech attending in person, representatives from government organizations, National Applied Research Laboratories, and various universities across Taiwan, including National Taiwan University, National Tsing Hua University, National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University, National Central University, National Chung Hsing University, and National Sun Yat-sen University also took part in the seminars.
The full name of the New Eastbound Alliance is the "Taiwan Eastbound Alliance - Landing America." Established in 2022, it is dedicated to creating a consolidated ecosystem that integrates currently fragmented resources to assist Taiwanese industries, businesses, and talents in reaching the international stage. CEO Dr. Edison Chen emphasized the New Eastbound Alliance's focus on three key aspects: "Attracting and Cultivating Talent," "Connecting Local Businesses with International Markets," and "Establishing Overseas Industrial Hubs." This includes bringing talent from Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia to Taiwan, thus creating an Asia-Pacific elite talent pool, as well as helping Taiwanese startups connect with international markets, and promoting overseas technology towns to create industrial supply chain zones.
The New Eastbound Alliance has recently been strengthening its collaboration with NCKU. In March, CEO Edison Chen, along with Mayor George Chen of Torrance, California, visited Taiwan to establish a sister city relationship with Tainan, as well as visiting NCKU's Innovation Headquarters and received a warm welcome from Professor Woei-Jer Chuang, Vice President of NCKU, and Dr. Sheng-Wei Peng, Deputy Director of the Innovation Headquarters at NCKU.
"The New Eastbound Alliance looks forward to future collaborations with additional universities and working closely with the seven major industry-academia platforms to collectively build the vision of an Asia-Pacific elite talent pool."
